Heralding Heroes giant puppets welcomed the Olympic Torch to Tandridge
Tandridge Trust and Farnham Maltings commissioned two artists, Becci Kenning and Darren East, to deliver the ‘Herald the Games' Art project for Tandridge.
This project formed part of the Surrey wide initiative ‘Herald the Games’ with many exciting arts and cultural activities happening across the district funded by Arts Partnership Surrey.
The brief for the Heralding Heroes project was to design and produce giant animated puppets to be harnessed on the shoulders of their makers on the day of the Olympic Torch relay to welcome the torch throughout our communities. The imagination and input of the makers was the key factor to ‘who’ their heroes would become.
The artists worked closely with two schools Godstone Village Primary School and St Catherine’s Primary School in Bletchingley and The Orpheus Centre to design and create Heralding Hero puppets in a series of puppet making workshops. The artists also ran evening workshops for the local community for families and neighbours to get involved and bring their heroes to life.
The Heralding Heroes puppets welcomed the 2012 Olympic Torch at Godstone Green and Bletchingley and then opened The Big Village Sports Day along with athletes from the GB squad. They even had a Heralding Heroes medal ceremony during the afternoon’s celebrations.
