The Fitness Place Gyms are fully equipped to suit all levels of fitness and ability. We have an extensive range of both Cardiovascular and resistance machines as well as a free weights area for more specific training. The air-conditioned Fitness Place Gyms at Tandridge Leisure Centre and de Stafford Sports Centre also have a Power Plate (Power Plate is subject to an induction and additional payment).
Whatever your main focus is within the gym, we'll have the right equipment to ensure you get the workout you need to reach those results and goals. Our qualified staff will also be on hand to progress or adapt any exercise you feel has become too easy or repetitive, by introducing new equipment to your routine or by simply showing you various ways in which the same piece of equipment can be used in many different ways to get those desired results.
What is involved in a Gym induction?
To use the gyms you are required to have an induction. You will meet the gym instructor who will cover all of the important health and safety requirements, such as a physical activity questionnaire, how to use the equipment safely and guidance about what equipment is best to use to achieve the results a customer is looking for.
How do I book?
These sessions are bookable at Reception. A gym induction will last approximately 45 minutes and is free.
What is a Fitness MOT?
A Fitness MOT session is for clients who wish to get a more detailed overview of their general health through a bio-electrical impedance test and other standard testing and measurement analysis. The tests would be specific to the client’s needs and it would be advantageous to complete these tests on a regular basis, every 2 to 3 months.
What are the benefits?
With the MOT it can show an individual where they might need to improve, in which case a greater focus on this area will yield results faster. Repeat results that show improvement, are very motivational!
How do I book?
These sessions are bookable at Reception. A Fitness MOT will last up to an hour and costs £10.
What is a Personal Fitness Programme?
This is a specific programme based on a client’s goals. The instructor will take the client around the gym putting together a detailed programme of exercise. Testing and adjusting levels, speeds etc on the cardio machines will be explored with the aim to hit a specific heart rate percentage to achieve optimal results. These will then be entered onto the programme so that clients are safe in the knowledge that they are working effectively when exercising on their own. The same will be completed when setting any resistance-based programme to accompany this. It would be advantageous to repeat a Personal Fitness Programme again 6 to 8 weeks later.
What are the benefits?
A Personal Fitness Programme will give the client more confidence in the gym, since what they are doing has been checked and set up by an instructor, and should yield greater results and boost motivation levels.

These sessions are bookable at Reception. A Personal Fitness Programme will last up to an hour and costs £10.
What is the Tandridge Trust Exercise Referral Scheme?
The scheme provides an opportunity for those with certain medical / health conditions for which a GP or other health professional believe that regular, appropriate exercise will be of benefit, bringing significant improvements to health and wellbeing.
Who is the Exercise Referral Scheme for?
Those with the following medical conditions (for example), or undergoing certain types of rehabilitation, may benefit from joining the scheme:
Obesity / Hypertension / Diabetes/ Cancer / High Cholesterol / Asthma / Joint Rehabilitation / Arthritis, OA-RA / COPD & Breathlessness / Multiple Sclerosis / Osteoporosis / Mental Health Issues. Applicants must be 16 years or over and have no contra-indications.
How does the scheme work?
- Clients are referred to an appropriately – qualified instructor at either one of our centres, by a GP or other health professional.
- There is an initial consultation discussing how the scheme works and what it can offer, and a further consultation involving a gym induction on how to use the equipment, with exercises designed to meet your individual needs.
- You exercise during supervised gym sessions (if required). Independent use can be offered sooner depending on individual circumstances.
- During your 12th week you will be reassessed to determine whether independent use of the gym is suitable.
- Your progress is monitored on an ongoing basis, and your personal gym programme is amended according to your needs.
- You gain the skills, confidence and motivation to preserve with your exercise on an independent basis, therefore continuing to gain the health benefits that exercise can bring.
Exercise Referral Scheme sessions are held at:

Tandridge Leisure Centre, Thursdays 8am - 4pm
The cost of joining the scheme is £11, which includes a complimentary 6 month centre membership. You can then purchase a 10 session saver pass for £36 or a 20 session saver pass for £72. Thereafter it costs £4.00 per gym session and centre membership rate for all other activities. Please note: £4.00 gym sessions are only valid during the term of your 6 month exercise referral membership.

‘In October 2016 I was referred by a physiotherapist to Anita Asghar, Exercise Referral Specialist, at Tandridge Trust, de Stafford Sports Centre in Caterham. At that time I was anxious having been diagnosed with COPD earlier in the year and was feeling half-hearted about the referral. My fitness regime was limited to dog walking and the occasional Pilates class with little enthusiasm for anything more demanding.
My first meeting with Anita, in her office, was to get the background of my health and fitness. We had an in depth chat and within the first five minutes I knew that Anita was genuinely interested in me and getting me to a better level of fitness which would help me with my illness.
I returned to de Stafford Sports Centre the following week for another appointment with Anita. The purpose of this was for Anita to assess my fitness ability and to devise an exercise programme that would best suit my capabilities and needs. Anita showed me how to use 9 different pieces of equipment including the treadmill, cross trainer and exercise bicycle. Anita monitored me throughout on each piece of equipment, making sure I was using it correctly to avoid any strains or injuries and then handed me a comprehensive exercise programme to follow on each attendance.
Since those first meetings with Anita there has been no holding me back, I am a regular ‘gym bunny’! Through Anita’s support and guidance my fitness has increased along with my emotional wellbeing. Our special Youth Gym is a one hour session aimed at young people aged 11 - 13 years old. Juniors aged 14 years and over can use the gym with no time restrictions, after completing a gym induction. This takes place on a Wednesday & Friday between 4-5pm at Tandridge Leisure Centre & de Stafford Sports Centre. It is an opportunity for young people to become confident within a gym environment, whilst improving their health and fitness ability as well as their knowledge. It is suitable for young people of all abilities and experience, with tailored programmes aimed at improving fitness levels. All sessions are supervised by a qualified gym instructor. An excellent way to burn energy, whilst making new friends and socialising!
Youth Gym is focused on three I's:
INTERACTION - working out alongside qualified staff and other members
INFORMATION - finding out more about the benefits of exercise
INTEGRATION - building upon your self-confidence and social skills
You can buy a 6 session Youth Gym Pass. However please note: all participants MUST undertake a gym induction session as the first week of gym pass, and a parent/guardian MUST attend this induction session. Each session is open to a maximum of 12 participants. Tandridge Leisure Centre & de Stafford Sports Centre Youth Gym Inductions are on Wednesdays from 4-5pm. Youth Gym runs continuously throughout the year except 2 weeks during Christmas.

At Tandridge Leisure Centre and de Stafford Sports Centre Fitness Place Gyms, we offer sessions specifically for disability groups from within the local area. We can assist with the delivery of most sessions, and also offer free inductions to support workers to feel confident in assisting with the specifically designed programmes.
