We have an extensive range of both Cardiovascular and resistance machines as well as a free weights area for more specific training. The air-conditioned Fitness Place Gyms at Tandridge Leisure Centre and de Stafford Sports Centre also have a Power Plate (Power Plate is subject to an induction and additional payment).

Whatever your main focus is within the gym, we'll have the right equipment to ensure you get the workout you need to reach those results and goals. Our qualified staff will also be on hand to progress or adapt any exercise you feel has become too easy or repetitive, by introducing new equipment to your routine or by simply showing you various ways in which the same piece of equipment can be used in many different ways to get those desired results.

Gym Inductions

What is involved in a Gym induction?

To use the gyms you are required to have an induction.  You will meet the gym instructor who will cover all of the important health and safety requirements, such as a physical activity questionnaire, how to use the equipment safely and guidance about what equipment is best to use to achieve the results a customer is looking for.

How do I book?

These sessions are bookable at Reception. A gym induction will last approximately 45 minutes and is free.

Fitness MOT

What is a Fitness MOT?

A Fitness MOT session is for clients who wish to get a more detailed overview of their general health through a bio-electrical impedance test and other standard testing and measurement analysis. The tests would be specific to the client’s needs and it would be advantageous to complete these tests on a regular basis, every 2 to 3 months.

What are the benefits?

With the MOT it can show an individual where they might need to improve, in which case a greater focus on this area will yield results faster. Repeat results that show improvement, are very motivational!

How do I book?

These sessions are bookable at Reception. A Fitness MOT will last up to an hour and costs £10.

Personal Fitness Programme

What is a Personal Fitness Programme?

This is a specific programme based on a client’s goals. The instructor will take the client around the gym putting together a detailed programme of exercise. Testing and adjusting levels, speeds etc on the cardio machines will be explored with the aim to hit a specific heart rate percentage to achieve optimal results. These will then be entered onto the programme so that clients are safe in the knowledge that they are working effectively when exercising on their own. The same will be completed when setting any resistance-based programme to accompany this. It would be advantageous to repeat a Personal Fitness Programme again 6 to 8 weeks later.

What are the benefits?

A Personal Fitness Programme will give the client more confidence in the gym, since what they are doing has been checked and set up by an instructor, and should yield greater results and boost motivation levels.

How do I book?

These sessions are bookable at Reception. A Personal Fitness Programme will last up to an hour and costs £10.

Testimonial for Anita Asghar

‘In October 2016 I was referred by a physiotherapist to Anita Asghar, Exercise Referral Specialist, at Tandridge Trust, de Stafford Sports Centre in Caterham. At that time I was anxious having been diagnosed with COPD earlier in the year and was feeling half-hearted about the referral. My fitness regime was limited to dog walking and the occasional Pilates class with little enthusiasm for anything more demanding.

My first meeting with Anita, in her office, was to get the background of my health and fitness. We had an in depth chat and within the first five minutes I knew that Anita was genuinely interested in me and getting me to a better level of fitness which would help me with my illness.

I returned to de Stafford Sports Centre the following week for another appointment with Anita. The purpose of this was for Anita to assess my fitness ability and to devise an exercise programme that would best suit my capabilities and needs. Anita showed me how to use 9 different pieces of equipment including the treadmill, cross trainer and exercise bicycle. Anita monitored me throughout on each piece of equipment, making sure I was using it correctly to avoid any strains or injuries and then handed me a comprehensive exercise programme to follow on each attendance.

Since those first meetings with Anita there has been no holding me back, I am a regular ‘gym bunny’! Through Anita’s support and guidance my fitness has increased along with my emotional wellbeing. I have a new found passion for exercise and would recommend all over 55’s to get in the gym. Thankyou Tandridge Trust and in particular Anita Asghar.’

Why choose Personal Training

Someone to help if you're not seeing results

If you've been exercising consistently for several weeks or months and aren't losing weight or reaching your goals, having a personal trainer may be a good choice. A trainer can look at your current program and eating habits and help you see where you could make changes to create more effective workouts. A trainer can also help you determine if the goals you've set are realistic for you, hold you accountable for your workouts and help you stay motivated to exercise.

Don't know where to start

Knowing how to set up a complete exercise schedule that includes all the activities you need to do, cardiovascular, weight training and flexibility can be overwhelming. Add the time and knowledge it takes to choose exercises, weights, reps and sets and you may quit before you even start. This is where a personal trainer can be the biggest help. We can help you maximize your time while keeping you within your own limits so you don't overdo it. We can also help you set goals and map out a specific schedule so you know when, how and where you'll fit in your workouts.

Bored with the same old workouts

If you're an experienced exerciser, maybe you haven't considered working with a personal trainer. However, it can be a great choice if you need some variety in your workouts. A trainer can bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to challenge both your body and your mind. Even if you just do a few sessions or meet every few weeks, you'll find it refreshing to have new workouts and new exercise toys to play with. A trainer can also introduce new ways to exercise - Circuit training, different methods of strength training and different types of equipment you've never tried before.

Need to be challenged

If you're like most of us, you tend to slack off on your workouts sometimes, especially when things get tough. A trainer can motivate you to push past those self-imposed limits, encouraging you to lift heavier, go longer and challenge yourself more than you would on your own. You'll find it's very hard to slack off with a trainer standing over you, telling you to do! You may even find hidden strengths you never knew you had, which can motivate you even more.

Want to learn how to exercise on your own

Even if your goal is to create your own workouts and exercise by yourself, having a Personal trainer for a few sessions can be a great benefit for learning the right way to exercise. This is especially true if you want to learn more about the muscles in your body, the exercises that target those muscles and how to do those exercises with great form. Just a few sessions can teach you a lot about your body, how it works and how to train it in the most effective way.

You need accountability and motivation

Trainers come with built-in motivation. Not only are you investing money into your exercise're investing time as well. Not only that, a trainer provides some accountability so, even when you don't have a session, you know your trainer will be asking if you did your planned workouts. Just knowing that may make it harder to skip your workouts.

You have a specific illness, injury or condition

If you have any specific issues like arthritis, heart disease, old injuries, etc., working with an experienced trainer (who works with your doctor) can help you find a program to help heal injuries and avoid any further problems. It's also a great idea to work with a Trainer if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant and want a safe, effective workout to keep you healthy and fit.

You're training for a sport or event

If you're training for a marathon, a golf tournament or some other type of sport or event, a Trainer can help you figure out what you need to do to stay strong without taking you away from your other training. We can also help create a training program and map out a plan for the coming event.

You want supervision and support during workouts

Some people know how to exercise and they even know how to do the exercises correctly, but they like having a trainer around for support and supervision. If you're lifting very heavy weights or need someone to help with partner-type exercises, working with a trainer might be a good choice for you. They can spot you during workouts and help you come up with a good training plan for your goals.

Testimonial for Chris Osborn

‘I have trained with Chris now for 8 months and he has helped me build my strength and fitness by a variety of workouts, starting from basic cardio training, walking, cycling & rowing and free weights to now more challenging circuits, running & cycling with intervals and heavier weights and more reps and core sessions. Chris keeps it interesting by providing variety of activities throughout the sessions.

He always has the ability to provide a varied work out, pushing me further each time but understands my limits and how to improve my skills, ability and fitness. He is always encouraging and motivational to push me and laughs with me when he gets me to do silly looking exercises.

When I first joined the gym I was having physio for a ruptured ACL in my left knee, and I couldn’t do very much – just walking, and even doing that it occasionally gave way, plus I was overweight and unfit. Since training with Chris, I have built muscles around my knee to ensure its fully supported, I have lost 2.5 stone and at the beginning of June I took part in my first Duathlon 2.5k run / 23k cycle / 5k run, which I completed in 2hrs. I am now training for the second Duathlon and also the offroad London to Brighton bike ride.

What I enjoy most is the variety and amount of different exercises you can do in the gym which I wouldn’t have had a clue about without a personal trainer. The buzz of exercising, and the new slimmer, fitter me, new wardrobe and lots of complements!’
Claire Abrey-bugg

'I have been having weekly Personal Training sessions with Chris since November 2011. During our time Chris has formulated a training programme for me to use to work towards my goal of weight loss and improved physical strength. As I make progress he adapts it to meet my changing needs by introducing more challenging exercises and ensuring that I perform them correctly. He pays close attention as I work to ensure that I am carrying out the exercises correctly and safely.

From the beginning, Chris has given me encouragement to achieve my objectives. His manner is never judgemental or critical, is always understanding and helpful, sympathetic when I find the going a bit hard but not allowing backsliding or cheating. “Come on, you can do it!” from Chris makes me want to prove that he is right and when I do complete a task to his standards he remembers to give praise.

My successes from Personal Training have been losing weight, 11st 4lbs to 9st 9lbs. My body shape is now good because my exercises have toned up and strengthened my muscles (including some I never realised I had!) My general and mental health has improved greatly and I now have much more self-confidence.

I mostly enjoy working with Chris for the reasons given above. He has inspired me to take better care of myself through diet and exercise and it is because of what I have achieved with his help that I now attend the gym twice a week in addition to my training with him.'

Testimonial for Lee Wilkinson

I was very happy with the Personal Training sessions I received from Lee. Lee took the time to understand my training needs and adapt his in depth knowledge of personal training to create a fun and diverse training regime. I found Lee incredibly knowledgeable, motivational and encouraging to help me achieve my goals.
Rupert Hinkes

I am very pleased to recommend Lee as a Personal Trainer. When I first approached the idea of going to a gym I had no previous experience but Lee was very clear and helpful in his introduction. My main goal was to lose what I described as excessive fat around my abdomen and Lee developed a course of action for me to follow. Throughout my time with him he was very encouraging and clear as he took me through the various aspects of the gym. I enjoyed my time with him and after several sessions with him felt confident to branch out on my own which I am continuing to do so. I would have no hesitation in recommending Lee as a Trainer.
