Gail Moore
Tandridge Trust Sports Awards 2016
Instructor of the Year

I have worked at Tandridge Leisure Centre, Oxted, since it opened in April 1990, one of the original members of staff!  That summer I gained my original Swimming Teachers’ Certificate and over the next 10 years I gradually added to that certificate with Parent & Child, Swimming for Disabilities, Synchronised Swimming, Flip & Fun, Mini Water Polo and Life Saving and Lifeguarding.

As my children grew, I took on more teaching. From the list of names on my badge list at the end of each term since the beginning of 2001, I have taught about 4000 individual pupils not including the pupils I have taught at Downs Way school as a ‘mother’s help’.

Over the years I have met and taught many inspirational and interesting people and still love the hobby that became a job.  It all started out taking a Bronze Medallion at Crystal Palace to get round rules and regulations of taking my Guide company to the beach one day over 30 years ago!

Sponsored swim for Lizzie - Friday 6 January

Unfortunately Lizzie passed away on the morning of Monday 19 December, she died at home surrounded by her family. The swim for Lizzie will still be going ahead to help reach her target.

Donations will be greatly received to the Chilworth Ward where Lizzie had been receiving excellent support at The Royal Surrey County Hospital. The money raised will be put towards Cold Caps, these caps cost £40k each and help patients keep their hair whilst receiving chemotherapy.

Lizzie thought it would be a very beneficial service being more local. Her Oncologist, (who has been fantastic), Dr Sebastian Cummins is very involved in this project and she saw it as a way of “giving something back” to all the staff of the NHS for all their wonderful care and support.

She hoped that by people supporting “Swim for Lizzie” it would benefit anyone who in the future is diagnosed with this dreadful disease.

To support this fantastic cause and help hit her target, Tandridge Leisure Centre are hosting a swim for Lizzie event on Friday 6 January from 4pm. There are three swim challenges available ½ mile, 1 mile and 2 miles. Challenges can be swum as an individual or as part of a team.

Lizzie had been a swimming teacher at Tandridge Leisure centre for 16 years (WOW), over the years she taught many children (and adults) to swim, and some are even now lifeguards at the pool! Lizzie had such a passion for swimming and was a very popular and well respected member of our team.
